Walk to Chichester Marina – 27th June 2020

Chichester CanalWe meet at Chichester Railway Station by the main entrance between midday – 12.30 pm for our walk ably led by John and Liz.

Please bring comfortable walking shoes and a packed lunch.

Between 12.30 pm – 1.30 pm we will enjoy our Picnic lunch at Canal Basin  which is across the road from the railway station. There is a cafe available.  If you wish you could do some Rowing on the Canal while we are eating our packed lunch.  This costs £7 per boat for the first half hour (there is a £10 deposit.)

 

Chichester HarbourAfter our refreshments we then set out on approximately  4.5 mile walk along the canal to Chichester Harbour down to Chichester Marina. The Chichester Canal runs from the sea at Birdham on Chichester Harbour to Chichester through two locks. The canal,originally part of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal was opened in 1822. Proposals for a canal linking Chichester directly to the sea go back as least as far as 1585.  It has been renovated and it is common to see waterfowl such as moorhens, coots, mallards, swans sharing the water with birds including the heron, kingfisher, whitethroat, common sandpiper, spotted flycatcher and woodpecker. We pass ‘The Spotted Cow’ at Hunston en-soute. At Chichester Marina there a cafe .

For those who feel they have done enough walking there is the option of returning by bus . The number 51 and 53.   The bus stop is at the Marina entrance on the main road.

Chichester MarinaAround 6 pm we plan to meet up again in Chichester at  ‘The Dophin and Anchor’  about a ten minute walk (0.4 miles) via South Street for a meal together before returning home.  Address: 9 West St, Chichester PO19 1QD for a meal together before returning home.

There is no booking fee for this event.
