A Day out at Henley on Thames

Saturday 8th June 2019

Henley BridgeRecords of Henley start from 1179, in the time of King Henry II. There are some historic sites worth seeing in Henley on Thames.
The famous Henley Bridge is a five arched bridge across the river built in 1786. It is a Grade I listed historic structure.
‘The Old Bell’ is a pub in the centre of Henley. The building has been dated from 1325: the oldest-dated building in the town.

Henley RiverBut Henley on Thames is perhaps best known as a world-renowned centre for rowing. Each summer the Henley Royal Regatta is held on Henley Reach, a naturally straight stretch of the river just north of the town. The event became “Royal” in 1851, when Prince Albert became patron of the regatta.

Henley High StreetPhilippa our host has suggested meeting at the railway station as it’s pretty central & close to the start point for the boat trips and also has parking. Henley’s not a big place so everywhere’s walkable from the station. Rail travel is not the easiest as it’s on a branch line – people would have to get to Twyford (on the main line from London Paddington to Reading/ Didcot/ Oxford) and change there. An earlier meeting time for people at Twyford Station may be possible.

Henley River 2The boat trips go at 14:30 and 15:45 and last for an hour.

Please see the relevant info that Philippa has sent. Henley Boat Trips
